Cabinet Refinishing
The boxes are usually fine. It is the finish that is finished.
If the boxes are solid and the doors are not delaminating at the corners, refinishing gets you a different kitchen for a fraction of what new cabinetry costs, and it keeps a layout that already works. Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled so every one goes back to the opening it came out of, and get finished away from the house. Boxes and face frames are done in place.
Degreasing is the step that gets skipped most often and causes most of the failures. Years of cooking film sits on the doors above a stove whether you can see it or not, and no finish will hold on top of it. Hinges and pulls come off rather than getting taped, because a taped hinge leaves a ridge you will feel every time you open that door.
Finishing the doors off site matters more than it sounds. A wet coat in an occupied kitchen collects dust from the whole house. Done elsewhere, they come back hard and smooth, and the only part done in your kitchen is the frames. You keep the sink, the stove and the fridge through most of the job, which is not true of a replacement.
Real jobs
One kitchen, from every angle of it.

The same kitchen, before above and after below. The layout never moved.
Questions
The ones that come up on a cabinet refinishing estimate.
Indiana does not issue a statewide painting contractor license, so there is no license number to check here. KJ Painting & Finishing LLC carries liability insurance and a certificate is available on request before work starts. Insurance and references are the two things worth asking any painter in this state for.
How long is my kitchen out of use?
Not long. The doors leave with her and come back when they are hard, so the gap is the day or two the frames are being finished. You keep the sink and the appliances the whole time. Expect to be living with open shelving for part of a week rather than eating takeout for a month.
Will you tell me if my cabinets are not worth refinishing?
Yes, and she does. Particleboard boxes that have swollen at the base, doors delaminating at the corners or a layout you already dislike are all reasons to put the money into replacement instead. She would rather say that at the estimate than take the job.
How do I get an estimate?
Request one through the form on this site or call (219) 533-3220. Kennedie walks the space with you, looks at what condition the surfaces are actually in, and sends a written estimate. Estimates are free and there is no charge for the visit.

Send her a photo of the kitchen to start.
One wide shot and one close up of a door is usually enough for her to tell you whether refinishing is the right call before she comes out. Estimates are free.
